This article may add years to your life! Simply look at the number in the triangle at the bottom of the plastic container that you eat, drink and store food in (see picture attached). Copy this simple algorithm onto your smartphone for your next shopping trip! It’s that easy and shockingly important!

SAFEST: #5, 2, 4
LESS SAFE: #1 (never reuse, heat, or put in sun)
DANGEROUS: #3, 6, 7
1. Try to avoid Thalates and BPA
2. Watch these products:
Saran Wrap – Since 2004 store sold “Saran Premium” now is safe #4 plastic (the dangerous type with #3 is still used commercially or in catering). Other brands, including generic brands, may carry the more dangerous plastic so try to avoid them unless you know they don’t use PVC #4 plastic.

Reynolds Wrap –Not the best if it is labeled #4 (avoid cooking with it and try Saran Wrap or #5 plastic containers to store food).

Ziploc Plastic Bags – all Ziploc Brand bags seem fairly safe.

Baby / Kids’ Items – Many baby bottles are polycarbonate (#7); however, they are typically not labeled as such and can only be identified by calling the manufacturer.

What the numbers represent:
#1 polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE) Products: Soft drink bottles, medicine containers
#2 high density polyethylene (HDPE) Products: Toys, bottles for milk, water, detergent, shampoo, motor oil
#3 polyvinyl chloride (V or PVC) Products: Pipe, meat wrap, cooking oil bottles
#4 low density polyethylene (LDPE) Products: Wrapping films, grocery bags
#5 polypropylene (PP) Products: Syrup bottles, yogurt tubs, diapers
#6 polystyrene (PS) Products: Coffee cups, clam-shell take-outcontainers
#7 other (usually polycarbonate) Products: Medical storage containers, some Nalgene water bottles
